「IJTは1990年代初頭に、奇しくも時を同じくして各々の大陸からNYに居を移した3人のミュージシャンの出会いによって結成された。 1994年、マンハッタンのブロードウェイのハーレムにある小さなエチオピアレストランのジャムセッションで産声をあげたこのピアノレストリオは、以後20年以上にも渡りトリオの名前が示す通り、アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、アジアの各国(アメリカ、オランダ、日本、ドイツ、ベルギー、ポーランド、ベルギー、パキスタン等)で活動をして来た。 トリオの1作目「Live at Bimhuis」から実に20年を経て、今ここに再び3人の音による会話が収録された！」

Profile

Tim Armacost (Saxophone) Growing up in Tokyo, Washington, and Los Angeles combined with Tim Armacost’s lifetime of world traveling enhanced this multi-instrumentalist’s absorption of cultural musics. Armacost started playing clarinet in Tokyo at age eight. By 16, he had moved to Washington and switched to playing tenor saxophone in big bands. At 18, he moved to L.A. and began developing his chops in numerous live settings with Bobby Bradford and Charlie Shoemake. Upon graduating magna c*m laude from Ponoma College, he headed for Amsterdam and gigged consistently around Europe for seven years, teaching and recording. Continuing his travels, he moved to India and learned tabla and the tradition of Hindustani classical music, performing frequently with Indian jazz and classical musicians and playing Bombay’s international jazz festival. In 1993, Armacost moved to New York, where he recorded his first session as a leader, Fire, on Concord. Live at Smalls was released next on Double Time, featuring trumpeter Tom Harrell. During this time, Armacost recorded and played with Kenny Barron, Roy Hargrove, David Murray Big Band, Maria Schneider Orchestra, and Randy Brecker, amongst others. Other diverse Armacost recordings feature the intercontinental jazz trio, a cooperative group featuring Joris Teepe on bass and Shingo Okudaira on drums. In 2000, another straight-ahead jazz date, The Wishing Well, was released on Double Time.

Shingo Okudaira/Drummer At the age of 9, he performed drums in a session at a jazz club. At the age of11, he released his debut album. At the age of 24, he moved to New York to pursue his further growth as a jazz musician. In his 19 years life in New York, he had collaborated with many musicians from his own generation to experienced veteran musicians, and was loved with his nickname ‘SHINGO’. While living in New York, he came to Japan on tour several times with his Shingo Okudaira New York Unit. After moving back to Japan in July 2010, he regrouped Shingo Okudaira The Force and has started his edgy activities with his bands as a leader and drummer, who is now recognized worldwide as one of the genuine jazz drummers. He has released 6 leader albums by now: ‘Maiden Voyage’ (1978), ‘Kilifi’ (1995), ‘Maconde’ (1996), ‘Alisema’ (1998), ‘The Force’ (2009) and ‘I Didn’t Know What Time It Was’ (2013).

Bassist Joris Teepe (1962) is the first jazz musician from The Netherlands to be able to make it in New York. Arriving in New York in 1992 with just his bass and a suitcase, he took lessons with Ron Carter, quickly met many musicians and started to work a lot. A year later he recorded his first CD, with a band co-led by Don Braden and featuring Cyrus Chestnut, Carl Allen and Tom Harrell. From that point everything really took off for Joris and he became a bassist in great demand. He has been working with the “who-is-who in Jazz”, such as Benny Golson, Sonny Fortune, Rashied Ali, Billy Hart and Randy Brecker. Coming from a bebop background it was being a member of the Rashied Ali Quintet for 9 years what really changed his vision on music. “When I joined the group we first had Frank Lowe on saxophone (later replaced by Lawrence Clark) and I had no idea what they where doing”. Currently Joris has recorded 10 albums as a leader. He also established himself as a composer, record producer (many different labels and artists), educator (director of Jazz Studies at the Hanze University, Bass Professor at Queens College, NY) and bandleader. In 2004 Joris Teepe has been nominated for the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the category “Artist deserving wider recognition”.
